Ask a friend to go with you, or call the Anti-Violence Project.
Consider talking to a sexual assault/rape crisis counselor. Sexual assault has nothing to do with the sexual orientation of the attacker or the survivor. Also you may have been infected with a sexually transmitted disease, which may take weeks or months to appear, but may be easily treated with an early diagnosis.
If you are living with HIV/AIDS, especially if you are symptomatic, medical attention is particularly important.
As a further complication, if the victim believes the rapist was gay, then the victim’s own negative attitudes may become generalized to the point where he fantasizes about getting even with all gay people. While rapists can be bisexual or gay, most of the men who rape and sexually assault other men are heterosexual.
I never felt so much shame, embarrassment, and humiliation in my life. It this what I get for being gay?"
No. What you experienced was a sexual assault, a crime of violence, not sex. The equivalent of date rape or acquaintance rape occurs in the gay community, just as it does elsewhere.
I became disassociated and depressed. A sexual assault does not make you gay, bisexual, or heterosexual.
What are typical reactions during or after a rape or sexual assault?
Sexual assault or rape is almost always a traumatic experience. Same-sex rape is not a consensual sex act between gay persons.
I attempted to spring up but another man stood over me and forcefully pushed me back down by my shoulders.
“You ain’t fighting back, is you, sweetness?” he said. To the rapist, the assault shows that he could not be “one of them” because he is openly demonstrating that he hates gays. Sometimes cooperating with a rapist is necessary to survive the situation.
Because there is a stigma attached to the label of gay, this stigma negatively affects how male victims believe others will treat them, thus impeding their recovery. Rapists sometimes use threats or weapons to force a person to cooperate. I was too scared to fight back or refuse. Acknowledge that homophobia is a form of prejudice that has the unfortunate consequence of silencing victims and encouraging others to respond inappropriately.
Tell him you do not believe that same-sex rape is an expression of gay sex or that it in any way alters his identity as a man. I have been suicidal. Also, the shroud of silence means that many people have misunderstandings about this form of sexual violence, particularly as it intersects with homophobia.
Homophobia is fear, hatred, and prejudice toward persons who identify as gay or bisexual.
He is the victim of a crime. He did not consent. A common belief about same-sex rape of males is that it is an expression of gay sex.
