Sex with men allowed them to have more sex. He could be a gay or bisexual man who is a sex addict or he could be a straight man whose acting out behavior scenario is with gay men.
As sex addiction therapists we are often unable to answer the question of orientation until the addiction has been addressed. Why are they not considered bisexual?
Most of the men identified as straight because they felt that this identity best reflected their romantic relationships with women, their integration in communities composed mostly of straight people, or the way they understood their masculinity.
These norms can create pressure to conform to traditional gender roles, which typically exclude the possibility of same-sex sexual desire or behavior. Sometimes it is in the form of actual sexual encounters in various situations and sometimes it is only in the context of cybersex experiences.

Can straight men have gay experiences?
Bisexuality: While heteroflexibility and bisexual men may seem similar, they are distinct. I find it particularly interesting and ironic that their conservative beliefs about gender actually encourage them to have sex with men.
Other men chose to have sex with men for reasons related to masculinity. I’ve written about some of these women and men who, if given a choice on questionnaires, identify as mostly straight rather than exclusively straight (Savin-Williams, 2017).

Defining heteroflexibility
The defining feature of heteroflexibility is that a person may typically identify as heterosexual but they remain open to exploring same-sex experiences without feeling that these experiences identify them as bisexual or gay men.
Though they loved the sexual experience and wanted to have a future relationship with the person, they had mixed attitudes toward homosexuality and premarital sex. My guess is that in reality many are mostly straight, queer, pansexual, or fluid and selected “heterosexual,” because it was merely the closest to how they view themselves.
Clearly, many young adults undergo considerable sexual fluctuations or question their sexuality during this time.
- Promoting Inclusivity: Open conversations can promote inclusivity by encouraging people to share their experiences without fear of judgment. (n.d.). Or he may find that he truly does prefer his relationship with a woman once he has given up his sexual acting out behavior in recovery.
Regardless of what his sexual orientation turns out to be, this man may be like all recovering sex addicts.
This can foster a healthier relationship with your sexuality, where exploration is encouraged and self-judgment is reduced.
Encouraging open conversations
Open conversations about male sexuality, female sexuality, gender differences, sexual experiences, and sexual identities are crucial in fostering an environment where everyone feels validated and understood, promoting positive mental health.
All described themselves as politically liberal and not religious.
