He has also expanded into film, portraying Prince Fiyero in “Wicked” and Dr. Henry Loomis in “Jurassic World: Rebirth.”

'A pop culture milestone': GLAAD praises People's pick

GLAAD, a leading LGBTQ advocacy organization, called the pick a "pop culture milestone" that reflects "just how far LGBTQ visibility in Hollywood has come."

"For decades, LGBTQ actors were excluded from conversations around leading-man appeal and blockbuster film franchises," Anthony Allen Ramos, GLAAD's vice president of communications and talent, said in a statement.

"Seeing an out gay actor star in some of the most successful movies of recent times and celebrated by People in this way sends a powerful message to the industry that audiences everywhere know that authenticity is attractive," Allen Ramos added.

Social media is elated, but not surprised

Since the news was announced on Monday, Nov.

3, Bailey's fans and fellow "Wicked" co-stars, including Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, have taken to social media to give the "Jurassic World Rebirth" star his flowers.

The entire "Wicked" crew, all donning t-shirts featuring images from Bailey's "Sexiest Man Alive" cover shoot, "got together" to show him some love.

Fans of Bailey followed suit, with some noting the significance of having the first openly gay man to grace the cover of People's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue.

"jonathan bailey being the first openly gay man to ever be named the sexiest man alive in the big year of 2025 is actually so special and lovely… in this political climate it’s things like this that keep my spirits lifted," one X user wrote.

Jonathan Bailey has been named People’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2025, making history as the first openly gay man to earn the title.

But for those of us who’ve long adored him, the real headline might be this: queer joy is finally front-page news.

And to borrow Bailey’s own wisdom? So it’s been amazing to meet people who have the expertise and see potential that I could have only dreamed of.”

It’s hard not to feel a little emotional about that — especially when he talks about family.

Watching someone thrive — especially someone who’s been told not to — “should be a real turn-on.”

Jonathan Bailey is People's Sexiest Man Alive. Absolutely. How do you spell… NDA?”

This is a man who can deliver Shakespearean gravitas one moment and deadpan comedic timing the next.

Jonathan Bailey is here to make us rethink everything we thought we knew about Hollywood heartthrobs. Watching Jonathan Bailey — out, thriving, and unbothered by old industry taboos — ascend to this kind of visibility feels revolutionary in its simplicity. “Obviously, I’m incredibly flattered. “There’s so many people that want to do brilliant stuff who feel like they can’t,” he said.

“And I want to say, Jimmy, thank you so much for turning it down so I could be here.”

When asked how he expects people to treat him after the win, Bailey joked, “I fu**** hope so.”

The British actor is best known to television audiences for his breakout role as Lord Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix’s hit series “Bridgerton,” which premiered in 2020.

I feel like that state is lifelong for me,” he confessed. For a community long relegated to coded glances and subtext-laden storylines, Bailey’s win feels like the kind of mainstream validation that doesn’t just wink — it waltzes into the ballroom in full queer regalia.

Jonathan Bailey’s Era

Bailey, 37, has been steadily building his résumé (and, let’s be honest, his fanbase) since his breakout as Lord Anthony in Bridgerton.

Social media is not surprised.

People are loving People Magazine's pick for "Sexiest Man Alive."

Joining the roster of A-list stars who have earned the coveted moniker is "Wicked" star Jonathan Bailey, who is also the first openly gay man to hold the title.

Bailey's recognition comes as the magazine celebrates 40 years of declaring the honor, which began in 1985 with Oscar winner Mel Gibson.

It didn't take long for the news about Bailey, which was announced on "The Tonight Show," to migrate to social media, where fans of the "Bridgerton" heartthrob and members of the LGBTQ+ community shared their reactions: elated but not surprised.

"It's the honor of a lifetime," the 37-year-old said to "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon.

“In fact, all my sisters, when they send pictures of their kids — I do find family does make me really emotional.”

The man who once described himself as an “overthinker” with a brain that goes off “like the Fourth of July” has built a life grounded in gratitude and connection. Enter Bailey: Bridgerton’s brooding viscount, Wicked’s charming Fiyero, and, as of this week, the universally accepted reason we’re all blushing through our phones.

“It’s an honour of a lifetime,” Bailey said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, laughing as if he still couldn’t quite believe it.

“It’s been a secret, so I’m quite excited for some friends and family to find out,” he told People. Last year’s winner was John Krasinski, and past recipients include Patrick Dempsey, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Michael B. Jordan, and John Legend.

Bailey’s recognition is being celebrated not just for his charm and talent, but also for the milestone it represents for the LGBTQ+ community.

Which, somehow, only makes him hotter.

The Sexiest (and Most Self-Deprecating) Man Alive

The photo shoot that sealed his title was pure Jonathan Bailey — shirtless in the freezing ocean south of London, then warming up in a cable-knit sweater with a glass of Bordeaux. “My niece was pupil of the week, and I was just so proud of her,” he shared.

When asked what every guy should have, he quipped: “Have a gay friend.” Somewhere, an entire generation of straight men just gained a personality goal.

His answers during People’s now-iconic “fill in the blank” game are pure delight — equal parts charming and chaotic. Maybe.
