Thank you guys at Gay's, I will see you in the next 2-3 weeks! Rennie’s daughter, Heather, will have a big role in the new business, too, helping wherever she’s needed.

The Deli plans to offer full breakfasts, including omelets, French toast, eggs, breakfast burritos, ham, bacon, sausage and Eastern Shore scrapple, and more.

Easton’s famous singer, Maggie Rogers, gave a big shout-out to Gay’s Seafood on the “Today Show” last year. “It’s not like you were going to get full eating just steamed crabs,” my mom said.

But we’re in the minority.

“If you eat the female, you’re losing all of that reproductive potential,” he said.

Lest you feel morally superior for only eating males, keep in mind that the crab in crab cakes, crab dips and other products containing lump crab meat usually comes from female crabs. Fair prices! Gearing up for Labor Day weekend, I called 34 crab houses to get an idea of the average price for steamed crabs in the Baltimore area, updating a project my predecessors on The Sun’s data team had published back in 2016.

The first question was for the project, which used large male crabs as the comparison point.

Tuesday, April 1 is expected to be an exciting day for Talbot County native Rennie Gay and his family.

I'll definitely be going back for more. I called Gay's Seafood, and although they didn't have Female Crabs (which are my favorite) they had #2 males for $30/ half bushel cheaper than anyone else. “In the name of gender equality,” I joked to my editors — but really, it was because I think female crabs taste better, and I personally wanted to know.

“We don’t sell females,” said a grumpy-sounding (dare I say, crabby) cashier at the first place I called.

Rennie took over the seafood business from his grandfather many years ago.

Of course, the new Gay’s location will continue to offer steamed crabs, soft crabs, shrimp, crab cakes, “Fried Fish Friday,” and other seafood delicacies using all new updated equipment for carry-out or dine-in. I love the real deal-- Gay's is IT ! One of them, in eastern Baltimore County, had even sold out of females that day.

The distaste for roe and the desirability of big, strong males easily explain the demand side of the crab price equation.

Cannot say enough good things, delicious! They put a couple extra in the bag and they were delicious! THANKS TO AMBER N BRADON,,WOOT

I have been going here for almost 20 years and with that being said I can't recommend these fellas enough! Get ready for the grand opening, which is scheduled to be on April Fools’ Day, April 1.

Lunch offerings will include hot and cold sandwiches, salads, homemade soups and assorted platters with fish, shrimp and crab cakes. After months of waiting for permits, working on the remodeling, and giving the building a thorough cleaning, Gay’s Seafood & Deli is set to open soon in a new location at 1021 North Washington Street, close to the Bypass and Rt.

    50 in Easton.

The former site of the Old Mill Deli is about 4,000 square feet in size and, according to Rennie, “You can’t beat the location!”

Gay’s Seafood has been a family-owned business since 1915 and has always been located on the water at 896 Port Street. In Shanghai, the best soup dumplings are the ones with pork and crab meat inside, garnished with a dollop of crab roe on top (and, if you’re lucky, inside some of the “soup” as well).

Don't leave without Gay's spice. Amazing and fair prices, great quality, and amazing service. Honestly they are the only people I will go to and I now travel 1.5hrs one way to get my crabs.

Great crabs! For one, size matters.
