Its legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of rum itself, and the brand has become synonymous with quality, tradition, and craftsmanship.
Mount Gay Rum: Origins and Early History
The story of Mount Gay begins with the arrival of sugarcane in Barbados in the 17th century. You can’t buy one — at least not directly from Mount Gay.
The only way to get one is to race in one of the scores of regattas that the brand sponsors every year.
The new distiller is a glass-ceiling-breaking powerhouse.
Mount Gay’s current master distiller, Trudiann Branker, is the first woman to run things in the distillery’s history. Cowboys may ONLY top Broncos or use services from Ranch Hands.
BRONCOS = Bottoms Broncos are harnessed and blindfolded and positioned in either a sling, on a bang box, or over a table or bench.
Each unique distillate will become allow the Master Distiller to create layers of flavor. They do hold onto a few house secrets, though, like their proportion of column still and pot still in each blend.
The Story of Mount Gay Rum
Travel Distilled tells the story of Mount Gay Rum, from its origins in Barbados in the 18th century to its current status as one of the world’s finest rums.
Mount Gay, the world’s oldest rum producer, has a rich history that spans over three centuries.
Next up is the “Eclipse,” a rum aged up to two years in ex-bourbon barrels. The brand was also perhaps Barbados’s most well known export until Rihanna took over the world.
Whether you’re familiar with Mount Gay or not, here’s everything you need to know about a brand that’s been distilling rum for more than three centuries.

It’s the oldest commercial rum company in the world.
The spirits world loves its superlatives, and Mount Gay can claim one of the most coveted.
The brand has become a cultural icon, celebrated for its role in shaping the history of rum and its connection to Barbados. The distillery uses a combination of traditional double column, Spanish and Scottish double retort copper pot, and recently re-commissioned Irish Coffey stills. The taller, narrower neck Fragasa pot stills will create lighter, fruitier rums.
Here's the basics...
Mount is a reverse consent event where you participate as a Top (Cowboy) or Bottom (Bronco). The Caribbean molasses contains different minerals from the region, depending on where it was grown. XO is crafted from a blend of rums aged up to 17 years in charred American oak barrels, resulting in a rich, complex flavor profile.
The Black Barrel expression, a mix of pot and column distillates, spends time in repurposed bourbon barrels as well. The distillery and plantation grounds are home to a centuries-old, 300-plus-foot well.
Sugarcane cultivation became the backbone of the island’s economy, and the byproduct of sugar production, molasses, was fermented and distilled to create rum. Old Brigand is another locally popular brand, but it’s not nearly as exported.
It was a Sober family affair for centuries.
Back in 1747, John Sober purchased the plantation and distillery that would come to be known as Mount Gay.
That name came from Sober’s friend, Sir John Gay Alleyne, who would eventually manage the rum business. Nearly two centuries later, the Ward family was the last to live on the distillery grounds before the company was sold to Rémy Cointreau in 1989.
Water and geology are essential.
From a geological perspective, Barbados is different from volcanically formed Caribbean islands.
The brand’s flagship product, Mount Gay Eclipse, was introduced in 1910 and became one of the most popular rums in the world. The local molasses, sourced from Barbados, has a higher sugar content due to the alkaline in the soil, which adds acidity and flavor to the sugarcane, leading to a higher yield in production. Hundreds of years ago, Mount Gay could rely on the molasses from local sugar cane for all of its needs, but that’s no longer the case as there simply isn’t enough available land anymore.
While there is no campfire for stories, the hot tubs work just as great.
On the range, COWBOYS and broncos can mount each other, as the Corral Code only applies DURING the mount inside the corrals.
The Bronco herd and Cowboys can move freely into the corral, however, there may be a wait to enter at times.
Bottoms are blindfolded and positioned in a corral where the Tops are allowed to MOUNT freely.
